Female Economy Ik ben er omdat jij er bent

WijkJury about

Living in a play, to roll out your sleeping mat on the stage of the City Theatre, having breakfast in pajamas in the foyer. That's what 700 Amsterdam residents did with the project 'De Oversteek by Adelheid Roosen. They made from the theater their community center. Fourteen of them are now stepping off the stage into the theater hall and form the WijkJury Season 14I15.

They visit plays and discuss with actors, directors and audience. At the end of the season the "Choice of the District Jury" is included in the Dutch Theatre Festival. The choice of open-minded, non-specialist Amsterdammers, from different districts, different cultural backgrounds and widely varying ages.
Six years ago, Adelheid was the chairman of the professional jury of the Dutch Theatre Festival. Her first act was the establishment of the WijkJury as an expression of her commitment to the communities.
At that time, the WijkJury took their first timid step across the threshold of the theater; last season they slept on the stage. The new WijkJury and the management members of Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam and Theater Bellevue take each other on back of their bikes and cross through the theater halls, across the stages and through each other's lives.
The WijkJury grows, the past few seasons Sister Juries have arisen in Utrecht, Arnhem, Dordrecht  and Groningen.

'Theatres should take out a subscription on these women. They’ve got so much talent.' I Adelheid, interview with Hein Janssen in the Volkskrant.

The WijkJury (Community Jury) is made up of women from various cultures who live in the suburbs of Amsterdam. Every two weeks during the theatre season, they all go to see plays being performed in one of two Amsterdam theatres: Bellevue or the Stadsschouwburg. Since the 2009-2010 season, they have had a voice in the adjudication of the Dutch Theater Festival. The WijkJury members watch the plays from their own perspective, from their own rich culture, and sometimes from another reality. The jury is tasked with selecting their top three from the plays they visit. One of these three plays is then included in the Dutch Theatre Festival programme.

'I used to go to the theatre in Turkey. I never dared to do it in the Netherlands. That was because of the language. I dare to go more easily now because I’ve seen so many. I stepped into the WijkJury and stepped across a threshold.' I Suna Sahin, WijkJury member

'It’s so nice to experience joy, sadness or something funny in this way. I see acting as a work of art.' I Asuman Donmez, WijkJury member

READ ABOUT THE WIJKJURY

Stichting Doen supports sustainable enterprise and it has invested in us and the WijkJury. We want to make sure it wasn’t a one-off. That’s why they asked us to describe the ‘method’ we use so it can be made available to people working in a similar area. Our response is to be found in the booklet Keuze van de WijkJury (The WijkJury Selection).

The WijkJury had its beginnings in 2009 with the first collaboration between a group of people from the suburbs and the Dutch theatre world, at Toneelgroep Amsterdam’s TamTam festival in 2009. Female Economy produced the installation Living Objects at the festival for Ivo van Hove’s play Rocco en zijn broers (Rocco and His Brothers) which is about migration. Living Objects saw Female Economy bringing the teahouse into the theatre, with men playing tric-trac in the hallways around the theatre. Afterwards they watch the play. One of the actors in Rocco noticed while onstage that they were migrants and was deeply impressed by how involved they got. ‘I could see how they experienced the content of the play. We play these people, but I realised that at rehearsals I hadn’t even had them in mind,’ he explained later.
When, shortly afterwards, Roosen was asked to chair the professional jury for the Dutch Theatre Festival, she said she would do it on the condition that a WijkJury was formed, consisting of women from a variety of backgrounds living in the suburbs of Amsterdam. As a result, twelve women watched 25 plays (about three a month) and came up with a shortlist of five. In May 2010 they announced their winners, and one of them was included in the Dutch Theatre Festival programme.

'There are plenty of projects for non-Western women – language courses, cycling courses and so on. But just how you approach theatre, how and where you buy a ticket, how you watch it, how you can talk about it, and what it can mean to you: that’s all virgin territory.' I Adelheid

The WijkJury has a varied membership. These women’s - and since season 14I15 also men's - histories are to be found in Indonesia, Suriname Haiti, Turkey, Morocco, Colombia, and Trinidad and Tobago. Some are the children of ‘guest workers’, others came here out of love, and still others had no choice but to flee the violence of war. Several of them were theatregoers in their country of origin, but hadn’t dared to take the step of pursuing their interest here in the Netherlands.
They are given information to give them a footing as they watch, and it’s explained to them what are the most important elements of the play – and how they might be interpreted. The jury members also meet some of the artists involved and take a look behind the scenes. They share a sense of curiosity. They embark on a journey of discovery from the outer suburbs to the inner-city theatres. Their conclusions are as diverse as their interpretations. They discover and embrace theatre, and the makers and theatres discover and embrace them.

We’re already coming up to our sixth edition – and there’s been a new set of members each time. And there are also WijkJurys in Utrecht (until season 14I15), Arnhem and Dordrecht. In Groningen a new one has just started.
