Female Economy Ik ben er omdat jij er bent

Field Work about

Besides her large-scale Female Economy projects, Adelheid also makes some remarkable smaller co-productions with other makers about subjects and at places she cares about. These projects are often in the suburbs of Amsterdam, but Adelheid can just as easily pop up in Jerusalem.

ADOPTION METHOD

In 2010 Adelheid and the Zina performers were adopted for the first time by residents of Groningen. To arrive as 'the Other' into a life, creates a vulnerable meeting where stories emerge which could lead to a theatrical scene. This workflow has become a true method, where from all four WijkSafari's arose.
Adelheid teaches young creators this adoption method. A workshop with research, development of socially engaged performances and a performance with audience. Or she gives a lecture to professionals in the field.
In 2014 Adelheid gave a one-week workshop to students from Bard Collage, New York. Later that year she was with her artistic team at the DEWAN symoisum in Wadi Rum, Jordan. To read a lecture and give a workshop to young dance pros. Also in Eindhoven. The Netherlands, they were curious about this particular work process and so the Park Theatre invited Adelheid for a speeddate and reading for the student of their Academy.

AL QUDS UNDERGROUND

Al Quds Underground cuts through the clamour of ideologues, fanatics, opinion formers and political leaders to create an intimate and personal voice from an area overshadowed by tension and conflict.

Composer Merlijn Twaalfhoven organises this intimate cultural festival in the living rooms of occupied East Jerusalem. The short performances take place in various locations spread out over the Arab part of the city, an area that is normally inaccessible for outsiders. Over the course of a single evening, the audience can visit several shows along the route that takes them to the various homes. Palestinian and Dutch artists are working together on this project. Adelheid participated in Al Quds Underground in 2009 and 2010. In 2012 Female Economy brought the Beauty Verhalen Salon (Beauty Stories Salon).

HELEND COLLECTIEF

This audio-video installation (Healing Collective) in community centres in Amsterdam is about a group of migrant women and their obsession with cleaning. At first the polishing seemed to heal the loneliness and physical complaints, but it turned into a compulsion. However, this obsession hid yet another healing mechanism, because cleaning together allows you to defuse your obsessions and to dance, and to recognise yourself in others.

ROCCO TALES

For many years Adelheid and Zina have been making two-minute movies in which the subject tells their life story.

Especially for the 2009 TamTam Festival held by Toneelgroep Amsterdam, they went into the Amsterdam suburbs to make eight video portraits modelled on characters appearing in Rocco en zijn Broers (Rocco and his Brothers), also by Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Rocco, his brothers and their mother journey from the poverty of southern Italy to Milan. It is a story about the search for identity made by all those people whose roots have had to be severed.

What did real migrants and their children think of the story of Rocco? Adelheid and Zina cooked with women from the community centres. They folded birds with young people at Koran school, and they drank tea with the men in the M.O.C. and in the mosque-squat. They all shared their stories. These eight video portraits lasting two minutes are about life in the Amsterdam suburbs and surrounding area. They tell of what migration can bring and what it can take away.

Rocco lives around the corner.
Rocco is standing next to you at the tram stop, gives you your change at the Supermarket, and delivers your Pizza.
To sum up: Rocco lives!

LIVING OBJECTS 1 & 2

Adelheid made Living Objects, the opening installation for Toneelgroep Amsterdam’s TamTam Festival in 2009. The motto was this: on 3 May 2009 Mohammed came to the mountain. The day-to-day reality of these Moroccan gentlemen is set in a tea house in the suburbs. Roosen transferred all that takes place in the tea house to the corridors of the Stadsschouwburg theatre in Amsterdam. The audience arriving for the premiere of Rocco en zijn broers (Rocco and His Brothers) saw twenty older Turkish and Moroccan men playing trictrac, Rummikub or draughts in the corridors leading to the new Rabozaal, before they also went to watch the play.

The same premiere audience also encountered Living Objects 2, in the theatre itself. They saw this living installation of twenty visitors from the suburbs enter the theatre where Rocco en zijn Broers was to be performed. They then watched the play along with the rest of the audience. The Suburbanites were visiting the Stadsschouwburg for the first time in their lives. As preparatory study, we watched Visconti's film Rocco with them beforehand.

It was a confrontational experience for the Toneelgroep Amsterdam cast to have these Suburbanites in the audience. They were looking into the faces of people who they were playing on stage, but didn't know. This was the start of the WijkJury.

RIJKDOM VAN NEDERLAND

06 Mar 10 I Women Inc Festival & TamTam 2010
There is a stubborn but erroneous belief that migrant women live in social isolation from which they are unable to free themselves. Ella Vogelaar, Halleh Ghorashi, Yasemin Tumer, Fatima Sabbah, Fatima Elatik, Jale Simsek, Zohreh Soltani, Ozdem Yalim and Adelheid travelled through the Netherlands and selected five women's centres that consciously choose to benefit from the strength and the great riches offered by migrant women. They asked five artists to work with the women in order to present their stories: Riches of the Netherlands
